NORMAN — Jeff Virgin, a resident of Norman who serves as a Special Judge in McClain County, has announced his candidacy for District Judge for Cleveland, McClain and Garvin Counties.
This judgeship is a newly created position for District 21. The three-day filing period opens April 9. The primary election, if needed, is June 24 and the General Election is Nov. 4.
From 2008 to 2013, Virgin was an Assistant District Attorney of the 21st District, which includes Cleveland, McClain and Garvin Counties. As Assistant District Attorney, Virgin prosecuted numerous jury and non-jury trials, including criminal, juvenile and civil cases.
In 2010, Virgin began serving as managing Assistant district attorney in McClain County where he tried criminal, juvenile and mental health cases. Virgin also oversaw McClain County Drug Court and Community Sentencing matters.
In 2013 the District Judges comprising the south central judicial zone appointed Virgin Special district judge in and for McClain County. In this capacity he currently handles criminal, felony and misdemeanor matters, protective orders, guardianships and civil matters.
“I have always endeavored to be fair, impartial and courteous to all those who appear in my court. Our judges should never forget that the decisions they make, both criminal and civil, affect the lives of individuals and families for years to come. Judges must treat all those who appear before them with dignity and respect. Our deliberations must be fair, impartial and just,” Virgin said.
“I pride myself on having a good working relationship with law enforcement officials, courthouse personnel, and numerous community service organizations. I am used to keeping long hours and being well prepared to hear cases. I consider myself a public servant and always strive to be the kind of judge our citizens can be proud of.”
Virgin earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law graduating with honors. He served as assistant editor of the Oklahoma Law Review, was on the Dean’s Honor Roll every semester and held several leadership positions in the Student Bar Association. He is a member of the Cleveland, McClain and Garvin County Bar Associations.
Virgin is a member of Rotary International and a supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Virgin is married to Rooney Virgin, also an attorney and fellow graduate of the OU College Of Law. She is employed by the Oklahoma State School Boards Associations, a not for profit organization that represents K-12 and Career Tech public school board members statewide.
Rooney’s father, Jim Patterson, was the Clerk of the Oklahoma Supreme Court for many years. Rooney is active in Junior League of Norman which supports Baby Steps and Food for Kids. Jeff and Rooney are expecting their first child in June.
