Town hall meeting to provide bridge repair updates

NORMAN — A town hall meeting to address developments on the Lexington-Purcell bridge closure will begin 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Lexington Fire Department.

State Rep. Bobby Cleveland, R-Slaughterville, said the meeting is designed to bring area residents updated information on the closing and planned repairs for the James C. Nance U.S. 77 and Highway 39 bridge over the Canadian River.

State officials closed the bridge Jan. 31 after finding cracks in the nearly 80-year-old structure.

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded a $10.8 million contract Friday for emergency repairs. State transportation director Mike Patterson said work was begun starting at 5 p.m. Friday.

Incentives and disincentives included in the contract are some of the most aggressive in Oklahoma Department of Transportation history, officials said.

The contractor stands to earn $2,500 per hour for beating the deadline. However, if the contractor is late, the company will be penalized $1,500 per hour.
