OU College of Architecture hosts lecture event

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma College of Architecture Division of Regional and City Planning and Bruce Goff Visiting Chairs of Creative Architecture co-sponsored a lecture event “Planning, Designing and Construction with Native Knowledge in Mind.”

The speakers focused on how Native American culture can have an effect on the future of the built environment.

Two of the speakers, architects Scott Moore y Medina and Jon Red Corn of Blue Star Studio in Pawhuska, explained how they use tribal knowledge in their master plans and designs.

Beyond motifs and aesthetic decals, the pair described necessities of understanding a community both culturally and geographically to ensure a successful project of any scale.

The third lecturer, Dan Wildcat, Ph.D., professor of Native American studies at the Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan., discussed how leaning on the diversity of traditions of the various tribes in areas like communication and sustainability can lead to better solutions in every aspect of problem solving.
