State lawmaker calls for OSBI Investigation of Warren Theatre death

OKLAHOMA CITY — State Rep. Mike Shelton has called for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to take over the inquiry into the death of a Norman man in police custody last Saturday outside the Warren Theatre in Moore.

“We are hearing many concerns from family and witnesses about the actions of the Moore police officers that night,” said Shelton, D-Oklahoma City. “For the sake of an impartial investigation, I believe the OSBI must step in and take this inquiry over from the Moore Police Department. To avoid having this situation turn into an even bigger controversy, I believe state officials should be put in charge.”

The family of Luis Rodriguez, 44, claims he was beaten to death by Moore police officers when he tried to intervene in an altercation between his wife and daughter.

For the OSBI to intervene, Shelton noted a formal request would be required from one of three local officials — the Cleveland County sheriff, the Cleveland County district attorney or Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt.

CCSO spokeswoman Meghan McCormick said Wednesday that Sheriff Joe Lester has no interest in making a formal request for OSBI to intervene at this time.

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn said since he has not been presented with anything from Moore, he is not ready to make a comment at this time.

“This is a tragic situation, and we must ensure that the investigation is as above-board as possible to provide closure to all involved,” Shelton said. “I hope one of these officials will act quickly to allow OSBI to begin their work.”
