Art exhibition to honor 20th anniversary of metro projects

NORMAN — An art exhibition honoring the 20th anniversary of Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) and its impact on the development of Oklahoma City will celebrate its public opening at Premiere on Film Row, a public block party from 6 to 9 p.m. today along West Sheridan Avenue in Oklahoma City, between Dewey and Shartel avenues downtown.

Premiere on Film Row, sponsored by Fowler Honda, is hosted on the third Friday of each month yearround, featuring film screenings, live music, art exhibitions and gourmet food trucks. There is no cost to attend.

The MAPS exhibition will open with a public reception at 6 p.m. inside Individual Artists of Oklahoma, 706 W. Sheridan Ave. Featured artists include Hugh Meade and Kristen Vails from Oklahoma City, Tommy Ball and Grace Grothaus from Tulsa and Richard McKown and OU professor Todd Stewart from Norman.

The exhibit, curated by Laura Reese in collaboration with the Urban Planning Institute, will include painted portraits of Oklahoma City mayors, large-scale maps, watercolor cityscapes, aerial photography and a proposal for a public sculpture commemorating teachers and educational efforts.

Local hip hop artist Gregory Jerome will perform from 7 to 9 p.m., and attendees can play in the Indoor Urban Park in the front gallery. The park will remain open during regular gallery hours through March 1.

Gourmet food trucks will be there.

The Paramount OKC, 701 W. Sheridan Ave., will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ legendary appearance on the “Ed Sullivan Show” with a free public screening of the show at 6 p.m., followed by a sing-along movie featuring the song “All You Need Is Love.”

A tribute concert will follow the screenings in the theater, with Kodey Prewitt and Annie Siess performing songs from the band’s early years from 8 to 9 p.m., and Jack Knight will honor tunes from the later years from 9 to 10 p.m. The Max Ridgway Trio will perform in the café starting at 7 p.m.
