Lincoln teacher made Special Education Teacher of the Year

NORMAN — Lincoln Elementary special education teacher Kathy Bayliss has been named 2014 Special Education Teacher of the Year by AMBUCS. The honor carries with it a $500 cash prize.

Bayliss has taught for 27 years and is a master teacher in Lincoln’s autism program. She is a regular presenter at district events, such as its Get Fit professional development conference.

In nominating Bayliss for the AMBUCS honor, Lincoln Principal Olivia Dean wrote that Bayliss had dedicated her life to the service of students with disabilities and was a recognized leader in serving students with autism.

“She creates a very positive, respectful work environment where students are nurtured, challenged and respected, and she literally gives her heart, as well as her professional talents, in serving her students,” Dean said. “She rarely rests and spends her summers teaching summer school and tutoring some of her students, too.”

NPS Special Services Director Justin Milner said he had deep appreciation of AMBUCS for recognizing and rewarding special education teachers.

“We continue to have a serious shortage of special education teachers in Oklahoma, and recognition programs like AMBUCS Teacher of the Year help to recognize and reward the dedicated work these individuals provide students and families,” he said. “Kathy is an outstanding educator and a valued anchor for NPS Special Services. We have the highest respect of and appreciation for what she does for our families day in and day out, and we don’t know what we would do without her.”

AMBUCS is a nonprofit service organization that seeks to create mobility for people with disabilities.
