NORMAN — The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office will honor a late sheriff for his years of service with the agency later this month.
Sheriff Joe Lester said a bronze bust of F. DeWayne Beggs will be unveiled at 2 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Cleveland County Detention Center, 2550 W. Franklin Road in Norman. Beggs served as a deputy from Dec. 14, 1988, to June 30, 1992. He was sheriff from January 1993 until he resigned in April 2008.
Lester said several people who admired Beggs as sheriff wanted to recognize him with the bust. Beggs died May 15, 2009, following an illness.
“I want to thank these anonymous donors for making this possible and bringing attention to the great job that did (Beggs) as sheriff,” Lester said.
Sue Beggs said she was happy when she learned about the recognition.
“I think it’s awesome,” she said. “That’s fantastic.”
She said her husband would be honored to know about the bust. The unveiling ceremony will happen on what would have been his birthday.
