NORMAN — Poet Ken Hada

to read at Depot

The Jan. 12 Second Sunday Poetry Reading in the Norman Depot, 200 S. Jones Ave., will feature the return of reader Ken Hada. Light refreshments are served at the free reading, which begins at 2 p.m.

Dr. Hada, from Ada, is a poet and professor at East Central University where he directs the annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival.

His award-winning books include “The Way of the Wind,” “Spare Parts” and “The River White: A Confluence of Brush & Quill.” His latest book, “Margaritas and Redfish,” is available from Lamar University Press.

Second Sunday Poetry is a program of the Performing Arts Studio hosted by Oklahoma Book Award winner and former Oklahoma Poet Laureate Carl Sennhenn. For more information, visit pasnorman.org or phone 307-9320.

Low Swingin’ Chariots perform

Kyle Reid and the Low Swingin’ Chariots will perform Sunday Jazz at the Depot with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

Tickets are $10 ($7 for students) and may be purchased at the Norman Depot, 200 S. Jones Ave., in advance or the evening of the concert if still available.

Reid leads the Low Swingin’ Chariots in a joyful revelry of original swing tunes, as well as classic New Orleans, Gypsy Jazz and Western Swing. 

The band is made up of Reid, guitar/vocal; John Calvin, guitar; Johnny Carlton, bass; Steve Boaz, drums; David Leach, trombone/ bass; Kevin Stringfellow, trumpet; and Trevor Galvin, saxophone.

Reid has released a solo EP titled “Sawdust in my Bed,” and The Low Swingin’ Chariots have performed at Norman Music Festival 6 (2013), Music for Moore tornado relief concert (2013) and Peace Love and Goodwill (2013) to critical acclaim and growing popularity.

The Low Swingin’ Chariots also have established a regular gig at Norman’s Deli.  

The Norman Depot provides a smoke-free listening room atmosphere for the enjoyment of a variety of musical offerings, which include Winter Wind and 2nd Friday as well as Sunday Jazz.
