NORMAN — Not wanting to miss out on the fanfare and excitement of the holiday, the first Norman area baby of 2014 arrived early afternoon bringing joy to his family and making it a New Years they’d never forget. James and Keri Snyder, of Norman, celebrated the New Year with the birth of their son, Christopher Brian Snyder. Christopher was born at exactly 12:41 p.m. at Norman Regional HealthPlex Hospital, 3300 HealthPlex Parkway. Dr. Shelba Bethel, HealthPlex OB/GYN, delivered the not-so-small infant who came in at about nine pounds.
Keri said her baby wasn’t originally set to arrive on New Year’s Day, but at 39 weeks, Christopher measured closer to 40 weeks, and Dr. Bethel decided to induce labor at 6 a.m. With all the Christmas holiday bustle and preparing for a baby, Keri said she had forgotten that it was New Year’s Day.
“I didn’t remember at first, but it was very exciting to have him born on New Year’s,” she said. “Let’s hope he likes black eyed peas.”
James said the birth of Christopher was his first child with Keri, but that Keri’s eight-year-old son, his stepson, was looking forward to meeting his new brother. Both Keri and James agreed that while Christopher has Keri’s nose, he looks most like James. As a first time dad to a newborn, James said he was already dreaming of the father/son activities they would do together like Boy Scouts and various sports.
“I’m already thinking about all the fun birthdays to come too,” James said.
Wearing a small striped hat and sleeping in his mother’s arms, Christopher appeared tiny, but Keri said she thought he would too quickly be out of newborn clothing and diapers at his current weight. As the first baby born in 2014 at Norman Regional HealthPlex Hospital, the Snyder’s were given a basket of baby goodies including a swaddling blanket, toy giraffe and diapers.
