Public vote at stake at meeting to examine extending public safety sales tax

NORMAN — A public meeting on a proposed extension of the city’s public safety sales tax will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Norman City Council Chambers, 201 W. Gray Street.

City Council members are discussing whether to call a public vote in April on extending the temporary, half-cent tax approved by Norman voters in May of 2008. A 10-year extension of the tax has been discussed.

The initiative provided funding for hiring and equipping 41 new police officers and additional firefighter positions and equipment.

The fund has also been used to build Fire Station No. 8 and No. 9 and remodel the former Smalley Center on Lindsey Street and Wylie Road into a police and fire investigations center.

A Citizen’s Public Safety Oversight Committee meets monthly and receives progress reports from the police, fire and finance departments.

City officials report the Public Safety Sales and Use Tax has generated $41,889,054.
