Apartment rezoning area approved

MOORE — Meeting on Monday evening for the first time in 2014, Moore City council members approved an application to rezone an area north of SW 19th Street and west of Telephone Road.

The rezoning was requested by Royal Park Business Development for the construction of an apartment complex. Prior to council’s approval of the rezoning, the vacant property was zoned at R-5 for a mobile home park. With council’s approval, the area was zoned down to R-4.

The plans for the 314-unit apartment complex include a gated community that will feature a clubhouse, outdoor pool area with grills and televisions, a recreation area with tennis and basketball courts. The complex also would feature two-story garages. Rent for the units, according to developer Greg Simmons, would range from $850-$1,300.

Simmons added that most of the tenants that would live in the complex would be younger and older professionals.

“We’re a little bit on the sharper edge. We put a lot of details in the rock and masonry and metal work. We like the access to retail, that is very important to us,” Simmons said.

Prior to voting, council member Mark Hamm, Ward 2, voiced concerns about increased traffic with the addition of the $27 million project.

“As commercial development continues on 19th Street, we need to have something to continually address that issue as the great things continue to happen down there. That’s what I hear when I’m out,” Hamm said.

Elizabeth Jones, community development director, informed council that since the apartments would be one and two bedrooms, there wouldn’t be as many drivers such as teenagers.

“There probably will be an increase, but I don’t think it would be as big of an increase as a mobile home park, which is what it is zoned for, or even commercial,” Jones said.
