Sooners smash Cyclones on the mat

AMES, Iowa — The Sooners just keep on rolling on the mat.

Sunday afternoon, it was 17th-ranked Iowa State’s turn to fall to fourth-ranked Oklahoma, which posted a 27-11 victory inside Hilton Coliseum.

The Sooners moved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 against Big 12 competition, the first of those being a one-point victory over Oklahoma State on Dec. 1.

“We can definitely take a lot away from this match,” OU wrestling coach Mark Cody said. “These last two matches were big tests for our program. The majority of our team is prepared every time they step on the mat. Our goal for the week is to have everyone prepared for Northern Iowa when it rolls into town next Sunday.”

Cody might have been referring to what happened at 197 pounds and heavyweight, where the Sooners, leading the dual 24-4, dropped two of the afternoon's last three bouts.

One of them may have been disappointing, but not a shocker, as second-ranked Kyven Gadson took a 3-1 sudden victory from OU’s Travis Rutt, who’s ranked third in the nation at 197.

In the following bout, Iowa State heavyweight Quean Smith posted a major decision, 13-2, over OU’s Ross Larson.

OU’s Jarrod Patterson came back in the dual’s final bout, at 125 pounds, to post a 5-0 decision over Iowa State’s Kyle Larson.

Despite a not-great end to the dual, OU dominated and put it away quickly, getting bonus points in the first three bouts.

Cody Brewer began the onslaught with a technical fall over Dakota Bauer at 133 pounds.

At 141, OU’s Nick Lester topped Gabe Moreno 14-0. At 149, OU’s Kendric Maple posted a 10-1 major decision over Luke Goettl.

The Sooners collected no pins, though Andrew Howe, at 174 pounds, posted a technical fall, 22-7, over Tanner Weatherman.
