Alspaugh’s home run lifts Sooners over UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas — Taylor Alspaugh’s solo home run in the top of the 10th inning propelled Oklahoma to a 3-2 victory over Texas-Arlington Tuesday night at Globe Life Park.

The victory lifted the Sooners to 12-6 on the season. The Mavericks dropped to 5-11.

The game went into extra innings after OU closer Ralph Garza Jr. gave up a game-tying RBI double to Darien McLemore in the bottom of the ninth. Garza (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to get the victory.

Alspaugh led off the 10th inning and was 0 for 4 when he stepped to the plate. The shot down the right-field line was the junior’s third homer of the season.

“Taylor is an older guy, he’s been around this game,” OU coach Pete Hughes said. “Instead of panicking, he came in and put a quality swing on a ball and got us going. We didn’t have too long to feel sorry for ourselves when he hit a lead-off home run.”

Garza, Kindle Ladd, and Connor Buchmann combined to hold the Mavericks to five hits. However, throwing strikes was an issue for Buchmann, who started the game, and Garza. Buchmann walked five and hit a batter over three innings. The three frames were scoreless.

Buchmann didn’t allow a hit. Garza walked three and hit a batter in his two innings of work.

Ladd came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and worked five scoreless frames, scattering three hits and with three strikeouts.

“Hats off to one of the most unselfish guys in our program, Kindle Ladd,” Hughes said. “Kindle was awesome. He was just pounding the zone. He settled everyone down. He comes in bases loaded, no outs and he provided some very valuable damage control.”

Sheldon Neuse went 4 for 5 and Niko Buentello went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Colin Tornberg (0-1) took the loss for the Mavericks. He worked one inning of relief and gave up Alspaugh’s homer.
