Tiger boys may be joining Timberwolves atop Class 6A

NORMAN — Oh, the things we thought we knew about soccer in this town.

We thought the Norman North girls were the most compelling story out there and they might still be and, whether they are or not, they took a nice step forward with Tuesday night’s 1-0 Crosstown Clash victory over Norman High.

After dilly-dallying around for most of their 2-1 shootout loss to Tulsa Union, they did it again throughout the first 40 minutes against the Tigers.

At the half, coach Don Rother told the Timberwolves to think of the lengths they would endure to keep Tigers off the scoreboard and then told them to go to those same lengths to crack the scoreboard.

So they did when Lexi Carroll set up Sheridan Spellman, offering a perfect corner kick to be headed into the net.

They took a step.

Maybe they’ll take a great leap when they finally get back on the field against Westmoore April 1.

The boys stole the show.

So you know, North claimed a 1-0 shootout, yet so much more was at hand.

Monday, the original Class 6A rankings came out with North No. 2 and NHS No. 4. Edmond North claimed the top spot, even with one less first-place vote (8) than North (9). NHS came in at No. 4.

Tuesday night at John Crain Field, the Tigers and T-Wolves played up to those marks.

A year ago, then-Tiger keeper Andrew Arledge’s star was born when NHS claimed a shootout. This time it was North keeper Alex Priscilla, stopping three of six Tiger tries in the extra frame, who played the hero.

But more was going on.

Because a year ago, the North boys had never been bigger favorites. With so many seniors and so much expectation, every minute the Tigers kept the T-Wolves off the scoreboard was another minute the T-Wolves couldn’t believe their misfortune.
