NORMAN — Norman Chamber Board of Directors votes to support PSST extension

The Norman Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to support and endorse the extension of the Public Safety Sales Tax on the April 1 ballot.

“The Norman business community recognizes the importance our first responders play in a healthy and safe community,” chamber president and CEO John Woods said.

“The public safety sales tax extension ensures we maintain appropriate and needed levels of fire and police personnel and invest in the needed equipment to keep our citizens safe.”

The Chamber’s Government Affairs committee carefully reviewed the issue and was active in the dialogue to construct the final ballot measure.

The existing half-percent sales tax will become permanent to maintain our police and fire positions, purchase new equipment and make capital improvements. The City will purchase an updated communications system, construct a new emergency operations and dispatch facility, and relocate Fire Station No. 5.

“Our board has a record of support for public safety initiatives,” Andy Sherrer, board chair said. “We will continue to monitor all ballot measures from the City of Norman to ensure the best balance for all parties involved.”
