Female officers make history

NORMAN — In February, Norman Police Officer Glenda Vassar talked to individuals at a Women in Policing Expo about the training and preparation that goes into becoming an officer, as well as finding a balance between work and family.

It’s easy to see that Vassar, as well as other female officers, are finding that balance and excelling in the work force. Vassar was recently selected by the National Association of Police Organizations to receive an Honorable Mention for the TOP COPS Awards representing Oklahoma.

The purpose of the awards is to educate the public about its nation’s heroes and pay tribute to law enforcement officers from federal, state, county and local agencies across the country for outstanding service to their communities.

“It’s a big honor for her and a big honor for the department,” said Capt. Tom Easley. “She’s an outstanding officer and has done a lot of good things for the community and the department.”

Vassar was the first female officer to be selected for the Norman Police Department’s Officer of the Year award in 2012. When she received the award, Chief Keith Humphrey said Vassar was someone who “truly goes the extra mile” and is a positive role model for women of all ages.

In 2013 she was involved in a shooting and received the Medal of Valor for her conduct that day.

She has built community relations with business owners on her beat, helped with Campus Corner clean up and made sure juveniles weren’t falling through the cracks with Department of Human Services.

“She’s to be commended,” Easley said, adding that she was an outstanding human being.

Another Norman female officer also is making history as the department’s first female supervising officer.

As a supervising officer, Sgt. Stacey Clement will be in charge of patrol officers. Easley said she will primarily be responsible for the health, safety, well-being and day to day evaluations of 8 to 10 individuals.
