NORMAN — Blood donors can show their community and school spirit by donating with Oklahoma Blood Institute from Oct. 1-3 at these locations:
· Oct. 1: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Norman Regional Hospital, Education Center Conference Room
· Oct. 2: 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Norman Regional Healthplex, First Floor Conference Room
Each blood donor will receive the choice of a free University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University blood donor T-shirt and a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Bedlam football game in Stillwater.
Through an initiative to support the Global Blood Fund, any donor can forgo the T-shirt. In turn, funds so designated will be contributed to GBF, a nonprofit that provides blood center technology and supplies to struggling blood centers around the world so they can meet local needs through voluntary blood donation.
Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate.
According to AABB, those with O-negative blood type make up only 9 percent of the national population. However, O-negative blood can be used in any emergency situation when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.
Anyone, 16 years or older, can typically donate blood. Blood can be given every 56 days. Appointments are not required but can be made at obi.org or by calling 877-340-8777.
