Norman residents among those seeking to run for county, state offices in first day of filing

NORMAN — Filing for county and state offices started Wednesday and continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday.

A handful of Democrats and a trickle of Independents vye with a field heavy-laden with Republican candidates. There are few surprises so far, but some of the new names on the local political slate are Norman residents, including unexpected challenger, Tae Si, to U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, and Erick Paul Wyatt, who will try to unseat U.S. Sen. James Inhofe.

The hottest seat in the county so far is District 3 Cleveland County commissioner — an open seat since embattled Commissioner Rusty Sullivan declined to run for re-election.

Four candidates are crowding the District 3 commissioner slot on the Republican primary side of the ballot. If a primary runoff is needed, it will be decided on Aug. 26. General elections will be Nov. 4. A few Democrats have indicated interest in the seat, but none filed Monday.

Candidates for state offices file with the State Election Board in Oklahoma City, while candidates for Cleveland County offices file at the county election board, 641 E. Robinson St.
