‘Pony Drive’ staged in Norman

NORMAN — Over the weekend hundreds of Ford Mustang automobile owners converged on Norman for the start of their 50th birthday celebration.

The popular cars were introduced to the American buying public in 1964.

“The official Mustang 50th anniversary celebration will kick off in the middle of the country so people can enjoy these pony cars as they were intended to be used, on the road,” said Ronald D. Bramlett, executive director of the Mustang 50th birthday celebration. “We believe this will be the largest group of Mustangs traveling together in the world.”

Norman’s part in hosting this kick-off was essentially to serve as a staging area with headquarters at the U.S. Postal Service’s National Center for Employee Development. Norman resident Bill Bradford, a Mustang Club of America Director and NCED employee served as local host coordinator. From Norman, pony car drivers headed out to further club events in either Las Vegas, Nev., or Charlotte, N.C., with various official stopping points along the way.

There was no group show for the general public to attend in Norman associated with this event. However, plenty of Mustangs were observed parked and driving around town. Norman’s hotels, restaurants and other merchants benefited from the influx of folks staying here a few nights before long drives east or west.

Dennis and Kay Quattlebaum of Lubbock, Texas, were among the Pony Drive participants lodging in a northwest side hotel. The fun-loving couple had driven an eye-catching red Mustang with fancy galloping equine graphics on the doors.

“This is a big deal for all of us because we’re going to celebrate America’s pony car,” Dennis Quattlebaum said.

They’ve been going on similar club-sanctioned motoring excursions since 2004. The Quattlebaum’s present drive began in Lubbock following a local club banquet and tour of the Buddy Holly Museum.
