NORMAN — Norman’s United Way campaign started a 12-days-to-victory push Thursday in hopes of raising the remaining funds to reach its $2.05 million campaign to fund local human and social services causes.
The victory lunch, originally scheduled for today, has been moved to Dec. 17, giving campaign leaders and United Way board members some extra time to complete the drive.
The campaign is using a television theme with personalities, including “Lethal Weapon” and “Blues Brothers.”
“Right now, the United Way Campaign is sitting at 90 percent,” campaign co-chair James Chappel said. The number equates to about $1.853 million.
“That is an incredible number, but as the campaign chairs, we want to do better,” he said. “If you haven't given yet, now is the time. If you have given, please think about giving a little more. Every dollar makes a difference.”
Campaign volunteers say every category in this year’s drive is down slightly.
“This community has given more than $200,000 that we know of that went through the United Way of Norman directly to tornado relief. Everybody has done something,” Chappel said. “We know there was a lot of money raised in this community.”
Chappel, community affairs manager for OG&E, said the campaign leadership hopes to get to at least $1.9 million, but he is hopeful for the $2 million mark.
