NORMAN — Mailbox stolen with possible campaign funds in it

Rep. Bobby Cleveland was the victim of a larceny earlier this week after someone stole his mailbox, which most likely contained campaign contributions.

Cleveland said he has been receiving one to two campaign contribution checks in the mail at his Norman office, 3160 S. Classen Blvd., so there was a 90 percent chance the mailbox stolen had money in it.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary Monday night, but on Tuesday morning, the mailbox, which is designed to look like a golf ball, was missing.

“There’s a pole about two feet tall where they broke it off and took off,” Cleveland said. “My main concern is that people knew campaign checks were in there.”

Cleveland filed reports with the police, U.S. Attorney’s Office and U.S. Postal Service. He said the post office would only get involved if fraud was attempted, such as someone trying to cash one of the checks.

Since the mailbox is Cleveland’s personal property, police will handle the crime as they would every other larceny. Cleveland said the mailbox has been at his office for more than 25 years.

Norman man faces several charges

Four separate charges were filed against a Norman man Wednesday in Cleveland County District Cour,t including grand larceny and three counts of burglary.

Dylan Ray Fountain, 20, was charged with grand larceny after allegedly stealing a concrete saw owned by the city of Norman in May. The saw was later located in a pawn shop in Amarillo, Texas, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Pawn transaction and video surveillance showed that Fountain had pawned the saw. During an interview with police May 22, he confessed to committing several crimes, including taking the saw.

Fountain was also charged with three separate second-degree burglary charges and malicious injury to property under $1,000 after allegedly breaking and entering into several vending machines.
