Heat alert issued in OKC metro

OKLAHOMA CITY — Medical officials have issued the first heat alert for the Oklahoma City metro area for the summer of 2014.

Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O’Leary says the heat alert was issued Sunday afternoon after six people called for medical assistance due to heat-related symptoms.

EMSA declares a heat alert when dispatchers receive five calls for a heat-related emergency.

O’Leary says Sunday’s calls ranged from people suffering heat exhaustion to a 19-month-old who was locked in a hot car for several minutes.
