Keever Greer wins DAR essay contest

NORMAN — Among the 38,000 essays submitted to the American History Essay contest, one Norman student’s story ended up on top.

Keever Greer, 14, followed a deep rooted love for history that had been cultivated by her grandfather, former curator for the Stovall Museum, known today as the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History.

Greer’s essay won not only at the state level, but form there, went on to regionals. The eighth grade state winner beat out contestants from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas in the South Central Division. From there, Greer won third place at the national level for the 2013 - 2014 American History Essay Contest.

Greer is now a two-time state level winner, receiving first place recognition for her entry in the 7th grade category last year.

Previously a student at Alcott Middle School, Greer received a $250 certificate to recognize her as a third place winner at the national level this month, as well as a $50 certificate for winning at the regional level in April for the eighth grade category.

This annual contest draws in students from fifht to eighth grade who are interested in writing and history. According to the essay guidelines on the DAR website, essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.

This year’s prompt, “The Lives of Children during the American Revolution,” prompted much more than just a fictional story. Greer said the project came with a lot of research.

“It’s a big deal to win third place in a national contest,” Cynthia Reed, outgoing state chair for American History Essay, said. “DAR wants more kids to write essays and be involved.”

Reed has been an American History advocate working with DAR for the past 10 years, contacting Norman schools to encourage students to compete in writing and strive for higher level achievements.
