Norman Y to host Healthy Kids Day activities

NORMAN — The Cleveland County Family Y is celebrating YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day on April 26 with a free community event that encourages kids in Norman to get moving and learning, and families living healthier.

Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, takes place at 1,900 Ys and kick-starts healthier behaviors.

According to the latest findings of the YMCA’s Family Health Snapshot — a survey of parents that gauges their children’s activity levels during the school year ‚ only 19 percent of children get 60 minutes of physical activity, only 17 percent read books for fun and only 12 percent eat at least eight fruits and vegetables daily.

Healthy Kids Day will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Y at 1350 Lexington Ave in Norman, featuring active play and educational activities.

A family fun run will kick the day off at 9 a.m., followed by basketball drills at 9:30, Power Blast at 10 and Water Safety Game and Obstacle Course at 10:30.

Participants will health information from an on-site dentist and can try samples from Jamba Juice and Spouts Grocery.
