Historic house celebrates centennial

NORMAN — When Fredrick Holmberg arrived in Norman more than 100 years ago, he tucked his violin beneath his arm and headed for the University of Oklahoma campus.

A century later, another violinist, Cindy Zhang, will perform at the home Holmberg had built in 1914. The Holmberg House is now operating as a bed and breakfast at 766 DeBarr Ave., north of Boyd between Jenkins and Asp avenues.

On Sunday, Zhang and other members of the Crouse String Quartet will honor the memory of Holmberg and his family during an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Members are among masters students from the OU Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts.

The event will be coordinated by Tristan Selke. Others in the musical group include Betty Shaohong Yaun playing viola and Paula SantaCruz on cello.

Holmberg was the first music professor at OU. In 1938, Holmberg Hall was named in his honor. Holmberg also was credited with forming and conducting the first Oklahoma symphony orchestra. The public is invited to tour the home Sunday.

Owners of the Holmberg bed and breakfast are Gene and Lou Christian, who live at the home. The home features lots of mission oak that emphasizes the elaborate natural grain of the wood. The dining room has a built-in hutch with lead glass panes, and it is still used.
