County disABILITY Coalition seeks training opportunities

NORMAN — The Cleveland County disABILITY Coalition has launched its new HIRE ME campaign.

In an effort to make businesses and the community aware of the need for opportunities for individuals with disabilities to gain employment, the coalition is focusing on recognizing businesses that offer training sites or employ persons with disabilities.

Employment is more than a way to make a living, it enables individuals to become involved socially and interact in the community. It helps provides a sense of fulfillment, self-worth and the feeling of giving back to society.

It is the goal of the coalition to make these benefits more available to all individuals who desire them.

In April, the coalition will host a celebration breakfast for businesses to recognize and thank them for making their establishments an inclusive environment.

Businesses that hire or train individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend. Contact Renee O’Leary at United Way of Norman, 329-2025, for more information.

Another goal of this campaign is to educate and engage new businesses in the benefits of hiring and training persons with disabilities.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the coalition is planning a community-wide event during October that will offer testimonials by employers, education on advantages of hiring, how hiring individuals with disabilities can motivate other employees as well as hearing from the perspective of employed individuals with disabilities.

The coalition also will have an artists of all abilities tent at the Norman May Fair, which will be Saturday and May 4.

The mission of the Cleveland County disABILITY Coalition is to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities with the purpose of increasing awareness of all disabilities, to identify community needs and to develop solutions to those needs.
