Big inning gives series to Red Raiders

LUBBOCK, Texas — Oklahoma no longer has to look for a low point in the season. The bottom of the fifth inning in Saturday’s 14-4 loss to Texas Tech holds the spot.

That was the inning when the Sooners (25-19, 5-9 Big 12) went from leading by two runs to down by eight and a third straight Big 12 Conference series was lost.

Left-hander Jacob Evans cruised through the first four innings, facing just one over the minimum.

Everything changed in the fifth inning. Texas Tech (34-13, 10-7) loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles, including two on the infield. Tim Proudfoot tied the game with a double to right field and the Red Raiders gained the lead on a bases-loaded single by Bryan Burleson.

Evans exited the game down 4-2 and with two outs. Reliever Drew Krittenbrink gave up five straight hits, including a three-run home run by first baseman Eric Gutierrez that pushed the lead to 7-2. In the 49-minute inning, the Red Raiders sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on 10 hits.

Evans (3-3) was touched up for six runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. Krittenbrink faced seven hitters without recording an out.

Chris Sadberry (4-1) went 7 1/3 innings in the win. He allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts.

OU built its early lead in the second inning. Kolbey Carpenter hit a lead-off triple and scored on a base hit through the left side by Hector Lorenzana. In the fifth, Hunter Haley went against an outfield shift to triple into the right field corner. He came in on a base hit by Carpenter.

The teams returns to Texas Tech’s Rip Griffin Park at 2 p.m. today for the series finale.
