Sooners held to seventh place at Big 12 Championships

TRINITY, Texas — Beau Titsworth kept it going and Charlie Saxon finally had a reasonable round, but that wasn’t near enough for Oklahoma to get out of seventh place at the Big 12 men’s golf championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club.

The Sooners began the day in seventh and stayed there after firing off a final-round 299 for a 72-hole score of 1192, eight strokes back of sixth-place Baylor and 34 strokes back of conference champion Texas, which finished off its 1158 winning total with a 291 final round.

Among individuals, Julien Brun, from TCU, ran away with the medalist crown, finishing off his 11-under 277 total with back-to-back 66s. Immediately behind Brun was Iowa State’s Sam Daley, who finished at 2-under par 286.

Titsworth, the No. 5 man in the Sooner lineup, belied his position by posting rounds of 73-72-73-72, good for a tie for fifth place among individuals with a 2-over par total of 290.

Though not OU, several squads went low on Sunday, led by Oklahoma State, whose 277 was six strokes better than any other team’s best round of the tournament. The Cowboys finished third at 1164. They were led by Talor Gooch, who closed with a 67 to finish behind Daley on the individual leaderbaord at 288, even with Texas’ Beau Hossler and two strokes in front of Texas’ Toni Hakula.

The 13th-ranked Sooners will try to regroup and put their best foot forward when NCAA regional play begins May 15.

From there, OU will try qualifying for the NCAA championship, which begins May 27 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan., site of last season’s Big 12 championship.
