CCHS shows off new display

NORMAN — The Cleveland County Historical Society’s new display, “University of Oklahoma Commencement,” is open to the public.

Installed at the Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum, 508 N. Peters Ave., the display presents photographs and heirlooms of early Cleveland County in honor of OU’s Graduation ceremony on Friday.

The photographs on display are from CCHS’ archives; originals and copies from the OU Western History Collections. The CCHS’ archives contain some 9,000 rare books, photographs and artifacts in two upstairs rooms within the museum.

The display includes images of Marion Donehew, the first student enrolled in OU in 1892; Ross Hume, the first graduate student of OU in 1899; and David Ross Boyd, OU’s first President, 1892-1908. Additionally, a number of antique books and Sooner Yearbooks from 1925, 1927 and 1928, as well as 1949 University High School Commencement Program and a selection of original University of Oklahoma postcards are on display.

“I think people will enjoy seeing the faces and places of early OU. It is interesting to see images of some of our earliest graduates and imagine what the university experience must have been like. As a proud OU College of Liberal Studies alum, I had a blast selecting objects from our collections inventory including yearbooks, commencement programs, and photographs,” said Erin Smith, curator for the Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum.

The “University of Oklahoma Commencement” display will be open the month of May. The Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
