CCS students hurt in Branson, Mo., after structure collapsed while they played paintball

NORMAN — Five Community Christian School students were seriously injured over the weekend while playing paintball in Branson, Mo.

During CCS’ senior trip, a concrete structure collapsed at a paintball facility and students standing on top of and below the structure were pinned underneath the concrete. The accident occurred Saturday evening and sent five students to the hospital, while other students sustained minor cuts and bruises.

T.J. VanDyke, CCS assistant principal, said from what he heard, there was an incredible rally from all students to get the concrete off of pinned students. Three of the five students sent to the hospital were discharged the same night of the accident. Two students remain in a hospital in Springfield, Mo.

One of the two still in the hospital suffers from a fractured pelvic bone on both sides. VanDyke said he believed that student would be discharged within a few days, depending on the student’s pain tolerance.

The most serious injury sustained in the accident was a minor brain injury by the other student who remains in ICU. However, VanDyke said no surgery would be required for the brain injury.

“Everyone is doing as well as they can. We give thanks to God, because it could have been a lot worse,” VanDyke said.
