McAlester — Anyone planning to drop by Check ’n Go in the Tandy Town shopping center near noon Tuesday to pick up a few extra bucks might have encountered the four-legged kind.
Check ’n Go Manager Cora Reeves looked outside at the check-cashing business at 1742 E. Carl Albert Parkway when she saw a trio of deer running through the Tandy Town parking lot and heading toward her plate glass windows.
“I saw these three deer running — and thought ‘oh no, there was nowhere for them to go,’” she said.
As Reeves stepped back, the first deer crashed through the window, shattering glass and hitting the counter in the office.
That stunned the deer, which fell on its back, followed inside by another deer.
Reeves said when she realized the stunned animal would soon be reviving, she ran into an adjoining office and closed the door.
“I didn’t want it to think I was the enemy,” she said.
The deer got up, walked behind the counter, then jumped over it.
In their confusion, the deer broke another glass and pushed another high glass panel open, like a huge door, to make their escape.
An employee at Vapour Realm, next door to Check ’n Go, said one of the deer tried to push through the glass at that business also, hitting the glass hard, before the three deer headed toward McDonald’s and then galloped away from the shopping center.
Although there were shards of glass lying around, there were no signs of blood, so the deer that hit the glass might have avoided being seriously cut. No customers had been inside at the time.
As the deer made their exit, Reeves called McAlester police, who soon arrived at the scene. They included Sgt. Chris Morris, who talked to witnesses who had seen the deer running through the parking lot before breaking through the windows.
