NORMAN — Lane closures at Main St. and I-35

On Tuesday, the City Traffic Control Division will upgrade signage on Main Street at the signalized intersection over Interstate 35.

The location of these signs on the traffic signal structure spanning Main Street means that short-duration lane closures between 9 a.m. and noon will be required in order to allow personnel to place and remove signs as necessary.

Traffic Control Division personnel will remove the single sign for each Main Street approach and install a separate sign for each of the five lanes on each approach. The signs over the lanes for traffic entering northbound or southbound I-35 will include the Interstate 35 shield and direction to further aid motorists.

Questions about the project can be directed to David Riesland, city traffic engineer, at 329-0528.

Buckle up —

‘Click It or Ticket’

Law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Norman Police Department, will take part in the annual “Click It or Ticket” mobilization Monday through June 1, focusing on drivers and passengers who are not buckled up according to state law.

According to the National Highway Transportation Administration, seat belts save about 13,000 lives each year. Oklahoma law requires drivers and front seat passengers age 13 and older to have a safety belt properly fastened at all times the vehicle is being operated. Children age 12 and younger are required to be properly restrained in the appropriate car seat, booster seat or seat belt, according to the child’s age and weight.

In 2012, 708 people died on Oklahoma roadways and restraint use was known on 477 of those. Of the 477 deaths, 58.2 percent were not restrained. Almost 50 percent of unrestrained fatalities were ejected from the vehicle.
