Former state senator charged with DUI, bribery attempt

Longtime lawmaker recently filed as District 3 county commissioner candidate

NORMAN — Former State Senate President Pro Tempore Calvin “Cal” Hobson was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and attempted bribery Monday. Hobson is currently running as District 3 Cleveland County commissioner.

Hobson, 69, of Lexington, attempted to bribe the Noble police officer first with $40,000 and later $50,000 if the officer would release him after he was arrested just before 5 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of U.S. Highway 77 in Noble, according to the affidavit filed with the charges.

Hobson also told the officer he would make him the chief of police, the document states. The charges, both felonies, were filed in Cleveland County District Court.

Noble police officer Joshua Lesher said he observed Hobson’s vehicle swerving from side to side in the lane and then crossing the center line into oncoming traffic on Highway 77. Hobson continued for a short time before coming to a stop in the northbound ditch, the affidavit said.

Lesher approached and told Hobson to exit the vehicle, noting in the affidavit that Hobson “was moving in a slow, sluggish manner” and had “red, watery eyes, slurred speech and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and person.”

Hobson exited the vehicle with his pants below his waist, at which point he was arrested, the affidavit said. When Hobson took the state’s test with a breathalyzer, the test showed a breath alcohol content of 0.27 percent, the affidavit said. It is illegal in Oklahoma to drive with a breath alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more.

Hobson received an aggravated count of driving under the influence of alcohol for having higher than a 0.15 percent breath alcohol content. He was previously convicted of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol in March 2013 in Cleveland County, records show.

Hobson served as a representative from 1978 to 1990.
