16-year-old has first surgery after being struck by train Monday

NORMAN — A Norman North High School student remained hospitalized Tuesday after being struck by a train Monday near the Acres Street crossing.

Harrison Braddy, 16, underwent his first surgery Tuesday for his femur and tibia in his left leg, said his father, Sean Braddy. Doctors also are keeping a close eye on his kidneys.

“His left kidney is damaged and they can’t repair that,” Sean Braddy said. “They’re waiting to see how the other one fares out — if he’ll have partial use or if it’ll have enough circulation.”

Braddy said his son remained in the Intensive Care Unit at the OU Medical Center and will probably be hospitalized for three weeks. He will likely have to undergo three months of physical therapy, as well.

“They have to fix his pelvis, too. He won’t be able to put any weight on that for three months,” he said.

Norman police responded to an incident involving a train and pedestrian Monday around 3:48 p.m. Responding officers located Braddy north of the intersection.

Braddy said his son was walking home from school, southbound along the tracks, like he does every day, and didn’t hear the train coming.

“He had his headphones in. I think kids should know, even if the train is blaring — he still didn’t hear it with his headphones in,” Braddy said. “They (BNSF) said they blew the horn.”

With a lot of kids out of school this summer, Braddy cautioned everyone about having headphones on around train tracks.

According to Burlington Northern Santa Fe, a freight train was traveling southbound, and despite their efforts to avoid a collision, the teen failed to clear the tracks and was struck by the train.

Braddy was transported from the scene by EMSStat for treatment of his injuries.

Along with the Norman Police Department and EMSStat, the Norman Fire Department, city of Norman Traffic Division and BNSF personnel responded to the scene. The incident remains under the investigation by BNSF Railroad and the Norman Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
