Remembering the fallen

NORMAN — Dark clouds threatening rain lingered Sunday afternoon, but held off for a service at Warren Cemetery for the Memorial Day holiday.

Cars lined the dirt path, much like an alley, that cuts through the little cemetery nestled in the middle of the Brookhaven neighborhood in northwest Norman. Members of the American Legion, Norman Police Department Honor Guard and others gathered for the service and to pay their respects to loved ones lost.

“This has got to be done every year. This is the way we honor our veterans that gave us our freedom. Without the veterans we don’t have freedom. Period,” said Don Schulenberg, state membership chairman for The American Legion.

“Young kids think, well, freedom’s here, you know, but you don’t know where it comes from. Two-point-four million men and women died so you and I could stand here now.”

Schulenberg said as long as there is an American Legion Post in Norman, they will continue to hold services honoring those who lost their lives.

Lt. Cary Bryant with the Norman Police Honor Guard said a number of honor guard members are also veterans.

“A few of our members in this group are veterans and so it kind of doubles for us to be able to still honor the service that we’ve had in the past with the service that we do now,” Bryant said.

The American Legion asked the honor guard to help with the service and Bryant said they’ve been happy to help them out this year and in previous years.

“The Norman Police Department Honor Guard has just always had a mission of honoring those who have fallen in the police service, but also we have a mission of community service,” he said. “It’s just part of the community policing that we do.”

The American Legion and honor guard will also be holding a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. today at the IOOF Cemetery, 1913 North Porter Ave.
