Norman resident rallies for Relay for Life

NORMAN — An organization that raises cancer awareness has local advocates walking for a cause.

Individuals from the Norman, Purcell, Little Axe and Noble areas have joined together in teams to participate in fundraising events to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Stacy Matlock, Relay for Life committee member, has been exercising cancer awareness efforts for the past four years.

Matlock said Relay For Life is just one of the many ways people can come together to raise money and awareness for the cause.

On May 9, Matlock’s team, along with 13 other teams, walked the Norman High School track for eight hours to honor those who have survived cancer and those who have died.

Beginning the event with a “survivor lap,” Matlock said walks like these are an opportunity to recognize survivors and honor those who have had their lives taken by cancer.

Walking in honor of her father, who died from colon cancer in 2009, Matlock said she wants to raise awareness for many personal reasons.

“It’s such a neat thing to be a part of,” she said. “The survivors take their lap of recognition, and other people walk in honor of their family and friends.”

Team members walked for eight hours into the evening, with at least one member on the track at all times. Matlock said the continual walking represents the continuous fight against cancer.

Teams set a collective goal to raise $100,000 this year. After their Relay for Life event, the teams have collected more than $88,000. With more events to come, Matlock said she is hopeful they will meet their goal.

Matlock said upcoming events, such as “Bark for Life,” will provide them with more opportunities to raise money.

On July 26, Matlock’s team will partner with The Sparkly Spot Pet Boutique and Pawlour for a mile-long dog walk. All proceeds collected that morning will help Matlock’s team reach their fundraising goal.

Donations can be made online for Matlock’s team at relayforlife.org/clevelandcook.
