NORMAN — Signing day has long since passed and next season’s first exhibition is less than three months away. Still, Sooner soccer received some more help Wednesday when head coach Matt Potter added Andy Varns to his staff.
“Andy’s preparedness and attention to detail during the interview process set him apart,” Potter said upon Varns’ hiring. “Andy exudes great character and has a personality that will be an invaluable asset to our student-athletes. We are delighted to welcome Andy and his family to our Sooner soccer family.”
Varns had been an assistant for the Division II women’s program at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where he spent three seasons helping guide the program to a 43-12-4 mark and also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator.
That part of Varns’ skill set might have particularly interested OU, which hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2010, and prior to that since 2005.
“Matt has a clear vision for the program and everything is set up and geared for success,” Varns said. “I am excited, honored and highly motivated to be part of a bright and successful future for the women’s soccer program at OU.”
Prior to Rollins, Varns assisted the program at Colorado Mesa University. He has also been very involved as a club soccer coach in Florida. As a player, Varns earned All-American honors at NAIA Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. He graduated from Brescia in 2007.
“Andy has a proven track record as a player, coach and recruiter,” Potter said. “His philosophy on the game and experience of working within teams will push all within the program to be better. The addition of Andy is another positive step in the development of our program.”
