Pharmacy chain targeted by bomb threats

NORMAN — Two hoax bomb calls targeting a local pharmacy were investigated Thursday by Norman police and the University of Oklahoma K-9 bomb unit.

If the person or persons who called in the threat is caught and convicted, they can be charged with two felony counts, both carrying a sentence of three to 10 years in the state penitentiary and/or a fine for each count, according to police officials.

Police investigated the bomb threats that were called in to two Norman CVS Pharmacy locations, 1100 E. Lindsey St. and 700 W. Main St., within an hour of each other.

Capt. Tom Easley said the caller at 1:24 p.m. Thursday indicated that a bomb would go off within five minutes at the CVS on East Lindsey Street. The second call was similar and came in at 2:19 p.m., indicating that a bomb would go off at the CVS on West Main Street.

The department’s bomb squad and the University of Oklahoma’s K-9 bomb unit were sent to the stores, which were immediately evacuated after the calls.

Lt. Chris Amason said standard procedure is to evacuate the store and determine if there is anything suspicious. In this case, the OU Police Department’s bomb dog searched a pharmacy in about 10 minutes.

Norman police have several K-9 units but do not have a bomb dog, Amason said.

“Our department and OU work hand-in-hand all the time,” he said.

Bomb threats are not common in Norman.

“They do occur,” Amason said, “but they’re not too frequent. I can’t remember the last time I worked one.”
