Moore needs a football coach

MOORE — This past weekend saw the final days of the 2013-14 athletic seasons as Westmoore and Southmoore both held their spring football games. However, of the three Moore schools, only the original failed to put on a game.

It’s understandable.

It would help to have a head coach.

Two weeks ago Moore football coach Todd Watters was quietly fired on the second day of spring football practice. Moore High School athletic director Chad Mashburn would only say the school wanted to go in a different direction.

“Obviously there is a reason why, but I don’t think I need to share those reasons,” Mashburn said. “Just not a good fit and we wanted to go in a different direction.”

Watters had been the Lions coach for two years and amassed a 2-18 record. That included going 1-9 last fall.

During his short tenure, Watters was often outspoken on matters dealing with players and their parents. He also had to reshuffle his staff several times due to six assistant coaches resigning over the last two years.

“It’s just something that culminated,” Mashburn said. “We felt like we needed to move on now.”

Mashburn didn’t give a reason why the district waited almost seven months after the 2013-14 season ended to dismiss Watters from his position. But with spring football now concluded and summer workouts beginning, the Lions are already behind schedule compared to other Class 6A schools in the state.

The coaching search to replace Watters is ongoing. A new coach could be in place very quickly.

“We hope to have him in place this week if at all possible,” Mashburn said. “We will do interviews this week and hopefully take them to the June 9th board meeting. We want to move fast on this one. Give the kids the best opportunity to succeed.”
