Fairgrounds: Koranda quits, citing ‘immense political pressure’; Jenkins named interim manager

NORMAN — Cleveland County Fairgrounds Executive Director Stephen Koranda has resigned his position and an interim manager has been named, county officials confirmed Monday.

Koranda, according to a post on his personal Facebook page, said he resigned “under immense political pressure.”

County Commission chairman Darry Stacy said Bryan Jenkins, operations supervisor at the fairgrounds, has been named interim manager.

The move comes as Cleveland County Commissioners had

scheduled an executive session Monday on the employment of the fairgrounds executive director. Instead, they accepted Koranda’s resignation and struck the executive session from the agenda at the recommendation of Assistant District Attorney Jim Robertson.

Commissioners on May 26 met privately with three fair board members. Koranda was hired to lead the fairgrounds in October after resigning a few weeks earlier as head of the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In late May some fair board members expressed concern over Koranda’s hiring and the firing of fairgrounds employee Andrea Earles.

Jenkins, at the fairgrounds for 27 years, said he was looking forward to the new position.

“Right now our main concern is getting ready for the county fair Sept. 4-7,” he said.
