Child found in middle of road

McAlester — An off-duty McAlester firefighter and his wife were driving through a heavy rain Monday when they spotted what appeared to be a dog in the middle of the road.

When David Perry and his wife, Sara, stopped to approach it, they instead found a year-and-a-half old toddler wrapped in a blanket lying at the West Coal Avenue and North Hickory Street intersection.

David Perry said the toddler’s lips were blue and the blanket was soaked. They picked up the child and rushed inside their home, which was nearby.

The toddler was clean and dressed in warm clothing when  McAlester Police Officer Kevin Hearod arrived at Perry’s residence, McAlester Police Det. Sgt. Chris Morris said. Morris said Hearod asked that the child be kept in the home as he went to look for the parents.

According to Morris, it only took one knock to find where the child lived — behind the Perry residence.

Perry, who has been a firefighter for almost three years, said that he was happy to have found the child when he did. Not only was the child in danger from other cars, but Perry said he was happy to keep the child away from anyone who would have bad intentions.

According to Morris and police logs, Hearod observed there were precautionary measures in the child’s home. Because the child had figured out a way to unlock the front door’s handle, a parent had installed locks near the top of the door. However, at some point the locks were not secure and the child made it outside, according to police.

Child welfare was contacted, but Morris said no charges that he knows of will be brought on anyone. Perry said when the mother came out to get the child, she was in tears and seemed sincerely grateful for her child’s health.
