Player honored for good work

NORMAN — A star player on and off the field, one OU alumnus was honored recently for his good Samaritan efforts throughout his life as an athlete, community member and friend.

On June 1, Rep. Scott Martin and Bobby Cleveland presented Brewster Hobby with a citation to recognize his volunteer efforts within the Norman community. The citation is an act of recognition by the Oklahoma House of Representatives on behalf of the citizens of Oklahoma.

Hobby said even though he was recognized as an individual, he represents all agencies of people in the Norman community who do service and volunteer work by accepting the citation.

Nearly six decades ago, Brewster Hobby began his college career at the University of Oklahoma as a student and an athlete, involved in both baseball and football. He soon met Bob Cornell, a fellow football teammate who would prove to be a lifelong friend.

Cornell suffered from a severely debilitating stroke in 2000, resulting in a speech impediment and partial paralysis to his right side. After learning of Cornell’s injuries, Hobby soon decided to help rehabilitate his long time friend.

Stan Ward, a Norman attorney, and Cleveland got together to find a way to honor Hobby and his extensive good Samaritan efforts, Cleveland said.

Ward, a long time friend of Brewster and Cornell, said he’s glad to see state representatives working to recognize great members of the community.

“Brewster is a great friend and humanitarian,” Ward said. “One that I would depict as a true good Samaritan.”

With previous knowledge of Cornell’s health issues, Ward said he remembered getting the call about Cornell’s stroke. He knew Brewster in college and he knew Cornell — and he knew the stroke was a serious blow to Cornell’s health. This blow resulted in an unbreakable bond between two old friends.
