NORMAN — On May 20, the city of Moore was directly hit by an EF-5 tornado. Within seconds, thousands of families’ lives were changed forever.
The situation was intensified when news outlets reported the destruction of two elementary schools and the partial collapse of a junior high school.
Immediately, discussions focused on how to best help in the recovery effort.
Jeff Kinney, award-winning author/illustrator of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, knew he needed to somehow help children and teachers regain a sense of normalcy.
He made calls to his friends and fellow book creators Dav Pilkey, of the “Captain Underpants” series, Lincoln Peirce, of the “Big Nate” series, and Stephan Pastis, of the “Timmy Failure” series, to enlist their assistance. The four banded together for a fundraiser benefiting the school libraries that were damaged or obliterated by the tornado.
