Children OK, dog owners cited

NORMAN — After a dog attacked schoolchildren Wednesday, accompanied by another dog at large, police confirmed Thursday that citations have been issued to two pet owners.

Three All Saints Catholic School junior high students were bitten, one received a concussion and others were scratched, officials said Wednesday. Two of the children weren’t in class Thursday but are expected to return today, said Theresa Bragg, director of operations at All Saints Catholic School.

“The children are good,” Bragg said. “They are fine.”

Bragg said the caretaker of the aggressive dog was a homeowner in the Castlerock neighborhood.

The children were walking from Mass at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church back to school when the attack occurred in the 3900 block of 36th Avenue Northwest.

Bragg said Wednesday the students have been walking back to the school from Mass through the Castlerock neighborhood for 10 years but now will stop doing that.

The dog responsible for biting and attacking the children was a Dogo Argentino. It is a muscular dog that was developed in Argentina primarily for big game hunting. It was euthanized, and its head was taken to the state health department for examination.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said Thursday the dog tested negative for rabies and all parents were being notified.

The other dog, a Great Pyrenees, is being held and was not euthanized because it did not bite anyone and it was not aggressive, Easley said.

Citations have been issued to both dog owners. The citations for both included having a dog at large, no city pet license and expired rabies vaccinations.

The police are not releasing the names of the pet owners at this time, Easley said.
