Commissioner shares stories of disaster recovery

NORMAN — District 2 Cleveland County Commissioner Darry Stacy recently shared stories of the local tornado recovery with fellow county commissioners at a national meeting in Iowa.

Stacy said the National Association of Counties forum Dec. 5-6 in Linn County, Iowa, was designed to allow officials to share information and explore strategies to create more resilient communities that can recover faster and better from disasters.

Stacy was asked to be part of a panel and speak on short- and long-term recovery and the resiliency shown by Cleveland County following the recent tornadoes.

Keynote speaker at the conference was Ken Burris, former chief operating officer of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and now chief executive officer of Witt O’Brien’s, a private company working in preparedness, crisis management and disaster response and recovery.

Stacy said Burris shared his experience in managing response efforts, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Columbia shuttle disaster, Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

“The forum was an informative exchange of ideas and real-world lessons learned,” said Stacy, a former police officer. “It offered a unique opportunity to listen to national experts on how our county and community can become better prepared for disaster and share on a national level what Cleveland County did right. In order to remain healthy, vibrant, safe and economically competitive, Cleveland County must be able to anticipate and adapt to all types of change.”
