Norman readies for weekend full of holiday events

NORMAN — Norman residents can celebrate the holidays during a weekend packed full of local festive events.

The annual Christmas parade will kick off festivities at 10 a.m. Saturday. It will start at Norman High School, 911 W. Main St., and continue on Main to Crawford Avenue.

Ed Copelin, parade committee chair, said this year’s parade includes about 85 entries, among them the University of Oklahoma softball team national champions and grand marshall Allen Morain, a longtime Norman resident and businessman. Santa Claus also will make an appearance. The theme is “hometown Christmas.”

“Kids enjoy seeing the parade, and it brings about the hometown spirit,” Copelin said on why residents should attend the parade. “All that said, it just adds to the holiday spirit.”

Sleigh Day and Santa at Brookhaven Village, 3700 W. Robinson St., is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The free event includes horse-drawn sleigh rides, photos with Santa and additional activities. Pets are encouraged.

The city of Norman’s 22nd annual Holiday Celebration is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Andrews Park Building, 201 W. Daws St.

The event includes free visits with Santa, as well as hot chocolate and cookies. Visitors are encouraged to bring cameras for pictures with Santa.

The event was originally scheduled for Dec. 6 but was rescheduled because of inclement weather.
