Philanthropist Henry Zarrow dies in Tulsa

NORMAN — Henry Zarrow, the leading supporter and donor to the University of Oklahoma, died in Tulsa on Saturday night. He was nearly 97. He and his late wife, Anne, supported countless campus causes and organizations.

“We have lost a giant,” OU President David L. Boren said Sunday. “Henry Zarrow’s generosity had no limits. Through his care for others, he taught us all how to live.  He especially championed causes that helped give all children an equal opportunity to succeed. Oklahoma will never have a better citizen.”

Zarrow was one of the greatest philanthropists in Oklahoma history. He served in leadership

positions in more than 50 philanthropic organizations. Henry Zarrow attended OU during the Depression years and later provided countless scholarships for OU students.

The Zarrows supported OU programs that included the library, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, landscape beautification, the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, Harold Hamm Diabetes Center and the OU Wayman Tisdale Clinic in north Tulsa.

He was also a strong supporter of social work, and the Zarrow Foundation provided the lead gift for the construction of a new building, opened in 2011, for OU’s social work program.

He and his late brother, Jack, strongly supported the center at OU for students with learning challenges.
