1,000 fewer misdemeanors filed in county compared to 2012

NORMAN — A number of filings in Cleveland County District Court have decreased across the board from 2012 to 2013, according to statistics provided by Court Clerk Rhonda Hall.

The statistics included seven categories: felonies, misdemeanors, civil relief above and below $10,000, civil miscellaneous, marriages and divorces.

The largest drop seen was the number of misdemeanor filings, which had a difference of 1,046. Felonies also saw a drop of 254.

“We’re doing a review of those right now to see if that just ties into a low crime rate, because we know we’ve got a low crime rate around here and it continues to be on the decline, or maybe there were more filed in municipal court,” District Attorney Greg Mashburn said.

Mashburn said the number of the charges they declined are not down and are basically the same as they have been the last three years.

One factor could be that municipal courts have been prosecuting DUIs for the past few years, which has dropped numbers down a little bit, he said, adding that DUIs tend to make up for a lot of the county’s misdemeanor charges.

The second largest drop seen was in civil relief cases under the amount of $10,000. There was a difference of 614 filings from 2012 to 2013. Civil relief cases above $10,000 saw a drop of 371.

Marriages filed decreased by 93 and divorces filed decreased by 88 from 2012 to 2013.

Listed below are the statistics from 2012 to 2013 in the seven categories mentioned:
