Grass fire consumes 15 acres

NORMAN — Firefighters battled a grass fire Sunday on Alameda Street, east of 60th Avenue Southeast, that consumed about 15 acres, said Norman Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey.

The fire did not reach any structures and no injuries were reported. The fire was called in shortly before 3 p.m. and it took crews several hours to control the blaze, Bailey said.

Four Norman fire stations responded and Slaughterville responded for mutual aid with two tankers. Crews also stayed on scene after the initial fire was under control to put out burning bales of hay, he said.

Norman also responded to a structure fire Sunday around 4 p.m. at 14316 Mesquite Road, near 142nd and Highway 9. When firefighters arrived on scene they found visible smoke coming from a trailer home.

Bailey said the fire burned just one room. No injuries were reported. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about an hour. Both fires remain under investigation, he said.
