All Saints students serving community

NORMAN — First, they measured tediously with rulers, then they cut strips, tied knots and started all over again. Students’ hands worked together to make baby blankets that new mothers will use to swaddle their babies and keep them warm.

All Saints Catholic School participated in a day of service with a variety of service projects Tuesday. Students helped Food and Shelter, Sr. BJ’s Pantry, Meals on Wheels, Birth Choice and the Norman food pantry.

Connie Land, a volunteer for Birth Choice, said the organization provides mothers with everything they need during and after pregnancy, including everything from ultra sounds to baby furniture. Birth Choice has locations across the state, including Norman, 457 W. Gray St.

“The organization will take new and used items. And it can always use donations,” Lang said. “If you’re pregnant and scared, call Birth Choice.”

Third- and eighth-grade students worked together to make fleece baby blankets for the organization.

Third-grader Moira Manning said she enjoyed working with older students and that she felt good helping babies, which reminded her of her younger brother. All Saints students made 28 baby blankets for Birth Choice.

Additionally, students made 110 fleece scarves for Food and Shelter, decorated snack bags with drawings for Sr. BJ’s Pantry, hosted a food drive for items to go in snack bags and hosted a canned meat food drive for the Norman food pantry. Last year the school collected 2,500 cans of soup for the Norman food pantry.

This year with the “’Meating’ the Needs of the Hungry” food drive, school officials said they hoped to collect at least 2,000 cans of meat by the end of the week.

Sr. BJ’s Pantry gives out snack bags to the homeless twice a week that are full of items like peanut butter sandwiches, bottled water and fruit snacks.
